so what is Stargirl?
Stargirl is a wonderful novel written by Jerry Spinelli that chronicles a tumultuous year in the life of Leo Borlock, whose world is turned upside down when a new student named Susan Julia Carraway-or, as she prefers to be known, Stargirl, takes Mica High School by storm. Nobody knows quite what to make of her-with her pioneer dresses, ukelele, pet rat, and penchant for singing Happy Birthday to people in the cafeteria. Stargirl is at first embraced, and then shunned, by the entire student body-except by two people-Dori Dilson, a kind freshman, and Leo Borlock, who is smitten by Stargirl and everything she stands for.
However, although he begins dating her, Leo is not a true "Starboy", as his classmates derisively deem him after he starts dating Stargirl. He is not capable of ignoring the criticism, and he tries to make Stargirl conform to the norm--and succeeding, for a short while. Ultimately, however, Stargirl remains true to herself and as elusive as ever-a faint desert rose, disappearing with the wind. She makes a whirlwind appearance at the Ocotillo Ball, once again enthralling the entire student body as she did at the beginning of the year-and then disappears forever, leaving Leo to wonder what could and would have been.
Fifteen years later, he still wonders about Stargirl and that incredible year he had with her, especially when he receives a gift wrapped porcupine tie in the main for his birthday- a gift that only one person would know to give him. Maybe he isn't alone.
